I'm Stewart Macintosh with the BBC News. Hello. Another COVID-19 lockdown has come in across England. Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the restrictions were needed to control the new variant of coronavirus. Mr. Johnson said people should stay at home except for a handful of reasons such as medical appointments and essential shopping. The weeks ahead will be the hardest yet, but I really do believe that we're entering the last phase of the struggle, because with every jab that goes into our arms, we are tilting the odds against COVID and in favor of the British people.

The governors of the American states of New York and Florida have warned hospitals that they must administer coronavirus vaccines more quickly. In New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo said hospitals must deliver the shots within a week of receiving them or face a fine and loss of future supplies. From the day you receive the allocation, you have 7 days to use that allocation. This is a very serious public health issue. Department of Health commissioner Zucker is a very firm about making sure the hospitals step up and deliver here. In Europe, there's been sharp criticism in France, Germany and the Netherlands about vaccination delays. The EU admits that limited production capacity has created bottlenecks.

The US President-elect Joe Biden has appealed to voters in Georgia to vote in record numbers as he campaigns in the state ahead of Tuesday's crucial runoff for two Senate seats. He told supporters that they could chart the course for the next generation. President Trump is due to address his own supporters shortly. Our reporter Nomia Iqbal is in Georgia for the runoff. Donald Trump has called those races also illegal and invalid and that's worried some Republicans. Because the logic goes, if Republican voters believe the president and think that their votes won't be accurately counted, will they turn out and vote? And that could hand an advantage to the Democratic Party, because if their candidates win those Senate seats, then it means that Joe Biden’s presidency is off to a powerful start. Earlier, Georgia's top election official said he didn't think it was appropriate for him to take the phone call from Donald Trump, in which the president pressed him to find the numbers to overturn Joe Biden victory there. Brad Raffensperger said White House pressure had overwritten his better judgment.

The Kuwaiti foreign minister has said that Saudi Arabia will reopen its air space and land and sea borders to Qatar in a major breakthrough in the long running dispute between Qatar and several of its gulf neighbors. The Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani will now attend a GCC summit in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. World news from the BBC.
