Hello, I'm Eileen McCue with the BBC News. Donald Trump has rejected a $900 billion coronavirus relief package, which was agreed by Congress on Sunday after months of wrangling. In a video released on Twitter, Mr. Trump denounced the bill as a disgrace. He said it failed to allocate enough to hard-pressed American families. I am asking Congress to amend this bill and increase the ridiculously low $600 to $2,000 or $4,000 for a couple. I'm also asking Congress to immediately get rid of the wasteful and unnecessary items from this legislation.
President Trump has pardoned two men convicted of lying to Robert Mueller's inquarry into Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election. George Papadopoulos, former Trump campaign aid and Alex van der Zwaan, a lawyer, both served brief jail terms among the latest group of 15 people who have been granted clemency by the president before he leaves office. Mr. Papadopoulos said the announcement meant the world to him. Mr. Trump has repeatedly dismissed the Mueller investigation into Russian meddling as a hoax. He's also pardon three former Republican members of Congress found guilty of corruption charges.
France has begun reopening its borders to traffic from Britain after a 48 hour closure, which has left thousands of trucks stranded in southeast England. European Union citizens and residents, freight drivers and others will be allowed in provided they have a negative coronavirus test. Doctor Emily Adams is an infectious disease expert at the Liverpool school of tropical medicine. She explained how the operation to screen drivers using rapid lateral flow tests might work. It would need health care workers who are familiar with taking swaps that so you get a high quality sample, and then using a high quality test coupled with that, and then the lateral flow test would just take sort of 15 minutes. So if you have one or two people per lorry, then you can imagine that it would take half an hour per lorry to run them and then release them. Members of the British military will also take part in the operation to clear the backlog of trucks.
Israel is heading for its 4th election in 2 years after the governing coalition failed to pass a budget by the end of Tuesday. Parliament voted narrowly against extending the deadline with MPs from both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud Party and their partners, the Blue and White Party rejecting the idea. Mr. Netanyahu had this response. We are against these elections. This is a wrong decision by Blue and White Party. The different election is forced upon us. I promise you that we will win. Elections will be scheduled for March. You're listening to the latest World news from the BBC.
